Small Diameter Tubing: How Is It Defined?
In fact, there is no globally unified standard for small diameter tube in the pipe industry; its definition depends on the usage environment and application. Different scenarios and industries may have different definitions of small diameter tubing. In the broad industrial and engineering fields, we can roughly define small diameter tubing as pipes with an outer diameter of 20 mm or less.
Small Diameter Tubing: Industry Definition
| Industry sectors | The commonly accepted range of “small diameter” |
| General/Industrial | Outer diameter ≤ 20 mm |
| Oil/Gas | Outer diameter ≤ 2 inches (approximately 60.3 mm) |
| Mechanical/Hydraulic/Pneumatic | Outer diameter ≤ 25 mm |
| medical devices | Outer diameter ≤ 4 mm (approximately 12 Fr) |
| Building/Plumbing | DN ≤ 25 (1 inch) |
Small Diameter Tubing Advantages
Small space ratio
This is the most obvious advantage of Small Diameter Tubing: it is very suitable for use in space-constrained environments, allowing for tight scheduling and making the entire project quick and efficient.
Flow rate kongz
Under the same flow rate conditions, small diameter tubes achieve a faster flow rate than large diameter tubes. Due to their smaller internal volume, small diameter tubes react more quickly under pneumatic or hydraulic pressure, making them useful in the robotics industry for enabling rapid robot response.
Flexibility
Small Diameter Tubing offers greater flexibility in terms of size and ease of fabrication. It is very easy to bend and install.
Why is Small Diameter Tubing So Accurate?
The principle is actually quite simple. The tolerances we usually calculate are actually percentages. A 0.5mm tolerance in a large pipe only accounts for 0.5%, but for small diameter tubing, especially capillary tubes, it could account for 50%. Therefore, high precision is essential for small-diameter pipes!
Furthermore, with smaller pipe diameters, the pressure and flow rate of the medium become extremely sensitive to dimensional fluctuations. Even minute tolerances can lead to problems such as excessive flow rate or pressure.
According to Poiseuille’s law, we can calculate that:
- If the inner diameter deviation is +2%, the flow rate may increase by approximately 8%.
- If the inner diameter deviation is -2%, the flow rate may decrease by approximately 8%.
Small Diameter Tube Application Areas
Medical Devices
The medical device field demands extremely high precision in small-diameter tuning. It is commonly used in interventional medical devices (minimally invasive surgical instruments, cardiovascular catheters/guidewires), analytical instruments (gene sequencers, blood analyzers), catheters, cannulas, etc.
Aerospace Field
Small diameter tubing, especially small diameter stainless steel tubing, is used in applications such as hydraulic lines and fuel systems in spacecraft. Small diameter stainless steel tubing can withstand extremely harsh flight environments.
Semiconductor and Electronics Industry
The semiconductor and electronics industries have extremely high requirements for the purity and cleanliness of the media used. Small Diameter Tubing can be used to transport chemicals.
