What type and grade of steel pipe are used for piling works?

For piling works, ASTM A252 is the standard specification governing steel pipes. 

ASTM A252 standard includes three grades: Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3.

Grade 3 is the preferred grade for piling because of its higher yield strength.

A friction pile draws strength from its adhesion to the surrounding soil. 

It’s suitable where harder soil layers are deep and not economical to reach. 

Open-ended pipe piles are best for friction piles as they cut through the soil, enhancing bearing capacity.

An end-bearing pile has its bottom end anchored into a dense soil layer or rock. 

End-bearing pile transfers loads to the stable strata, bypassing upper softer soil layers. 

This kind of pile is  ideal for supporting larger and heavy structures.

Open-ended pipe piles are used when encountering obstructions like boulders or rock layers. 

They are fitted with special driving shoes to increase toe capacity and are widely used in land and offshore structures like wind turbines and oil platforms.

Closed-end pipe piles are used when bearing capacity from the entire pile toe is required. 

They work well as friction piles, especially in loose sands, and can be employed as high-capacity end-bearing piles. 

Pointed tips are recommended when penetrating hard strata.
