API 5L Pipe Product Specification Level

API PSL-1 pipes are standard and cover a range of steel grades, API PSL-2 pipes are of a higher grade, designed for tougher conditions and undergo additional tests for enhanced performance.

API 5L PSL-1

This standard quality is suitable for most basic applications. Specific steel grades under API 5L PSL-1 include Grade A, Grade B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, and X70. The requirements are less stringent, focusing mainly on the chemistry and mechanical properties of the steel.

API 5L PSL-2 offers higher performance and is used for more demanding applications. It encompasses steel grades such as Grade B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, and X80. PSL-2 sets stricter chemical and mechanical properties. Additionally, API 5L PSL-2 mandates several tests and inspections, including:

  • Charpy impact testing to assess the material’s resistance to sudden impact or load.
  • Seamless non-destructive testing.
  • Hydrostatic testing to ensure the pipe can withstand internal pressure.
  • Enhanced traceability requirements post-testing.
