ASTM A106 Pipe Testing Requirements

  • Hydrostatic pressure test：Every ASTM A106 pipe must undergo a hydrostatic pressure test to inspect for cracks, holes, or slag inclusions. The permissible fiber stress for A106 is 60% of the fixed minimum yield strength. The maximum pressure for NPS3 pipe cannot exceed 2500 psi, and for larger pipe sizes, it cannot exceed 2800 psi. The test pressure must be maintained for at least five seconds. Any leakage or other defects observed during the test will result in failure.
  • Tensile Test：Pipe sizes NPS 8 and above can be stretched both horizontally and longitudinally. Pipe sizes below NPS 8 are weighed by batch, while larger sizes are weighed by length.
  • Bend Test：Pipe sizes NPS 2 and below require a cold bend test, bending to a specified angle to inspect for surface cracks.
  • Flattening Test：While the standard does not require this test for all sizes, it is required for pipe sizes NPS 2-1/2 and above to assess their compressive and deformation resistance.
