Alloy Pipe – From Elements To Applications

Table of Contents

Alloy Pipe

What Does “Alloy” Mean?

Alloy pipes refer to pipes made of alloy materials. Alloys are composed of multiple elements, such as chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. The performance of the pipe is improved by controlling the content of different elements. Different compositions and contents will show different performance.

Alloy Pipe

Elements Contained In Alloy Pipe

Chromium (Cr)

Its primary function is to enhance corrosion resistance and high-temperature resistance. When the chromium content exceeds 10.5%, a passive film of Cr₂O₃ forms on the pipe surface, isolating it from the outside world and achieving corrosion protection. This stable passive film also makes the pipe more resistant to high temperatures and improves strength.

Nickel (Ni)

Nickel forms a stable austenite and is the primary element in austenite. It significantly enhances toughness and corrosion resistance at low temperatures, making it easier to form during processing.

Molybdenum (Mo)

Molybdenum can be added to stainless steel in the presence of chlorides, such as seawater or chloride ion solutions, to improve its corrosion resistance. The addition of molybdenum also increases the hardenability during heat treatment, resulting in a more uniform overall material. Molybdenum also increases the recrystallization temperature, significantly improving high-temperature resistance and creep resistance.

Manganese (Mn)

Manganese, like molybdenum, has the same properties as molybdenum: it improves hardenability during heat treatment and achieves a more uniform overall material. Manganese can also be used as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer. Dissolving in ferrite, it increases the strength of steel. Manganese is also present in austenite.

Silicon (Si)

Silicon’s primary use is as a deoxidizer. Silicon is much more effective than manganese as a deoxidizer, improving the pipe’s oxidation resistance, strength, and hardness.

Common Grades And Chemical Compositions Of Alloy Pipes

Austenitic Stainless Steel Alloy Pipes

Austenitic stainless steel is the most widely used alloy stainless steel. Due to its special face-centered cubic structure, this material is usually non-magnetic, has high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, and is also very plastic.

Duplex Stainless Steel Alloy Pipes

The “duplex” in duplex stainless steel refers to austenite and ferrite. Its microstructure is composed of half austenite and half ferrite, combining the advantages of both. It offers high strength (more than twice that of austenite), excellent toughness, and corrosion resistance—its most prominent advantage. It also offers excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

Alloy Steel Pipe Application

  • Energy and power: used for high temperature and high pressure fluid and oil and gas transmission, such as P92 alloy used for thermal power plant steam pipeline, P5 alloy steel pipe used for gasoline transportation in the oil extraction industry. HP40 pipeline has strong corrosion resistance and is used for natural gas transportation.
  • Chemical and petrochemical: used for conveying corrosive fluids. For example, P22 alloy steel pipe conveys hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid.
  • Aerospace: Titanium alloy seamless pipes are used for fuel transportation sent by rockets.
  • Military field: Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel pipes act as power units in the hydraulic system of military armored vehicles.
  • Marine field: Duplex steel pipes have strong corrosion resistance and are used in deep sea mining projects.

Pipe Alloy Maintenance

Although alloy pipes have strong performance, daily maintenance is also crucial. Regularly use a neutral cleaning cloth to wipe the surface of the pipe (do not use bleach or chlorine-containing detergents). If there are attachments on the surface, wipe them carefully to avoid scratching the surface of the pipe. The surface moisture should also be wiped dry immediately to avoid electrolyte corrosion. Pay special attention to titanium alloy pipes. Clean the level gauge with clean water or trichloroethylene every month to prevent harmful substances from causing local corrosion and accelerating the aging of the pipe.

Comparison Of The Characteristics Of Alloy Pipes And Carbon Steel Pipes

Characteristics of carbon steel pipes:

easy processing, low cost and wide application, poor tempering stability, poor permeability, and cannot meet special performance requirements

Characteristics of alloy pipes:

difficult processing, high cost, high tempering stability, high hardenability, and can meet special performance requirements
