SA-179

SA-179‌ is a cold-drawn seamless carbon steel pipe in accordance with ASTM international standards. This steel pipe meets multiple requirements such as strength, corrosion resistance and cost control under extreme conditions of high temperature and high pressure. Whether it is the boiler heat exchanger in a thermal power plant or the condensation system in an oil refining unit, it is an “excellent student” with excellent performance. The unique performance parameters of SA-179 have become the “standard” material in the global industrial supply chain.

‌Technical advantages‌
High temperature resistance‌: Long-term working temperature can reach 450℃, short-term peak tolerance 540℃ (better than the 480℃ limit of SA-192).
Corrosion resistance‌: Low sulfur and phosphorus components reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion and are suitable for working conditions containing weak acidic media.
Economical‌: The cold drawing process reduces the subsequent machining costs, and the yield rate is as high as more than 95%.

SA-179 Application And Advantages

SA 179 application scenarios

Heat exchangers and condensers: SA-179 steel pipes are the preferred material due to their ultra-thin wall thickness (minimum 0.5mm) and uniform pipe diameter tolerance (±0.1mm), which not only reduces the weight of the structure, but also improves the heat transfer efficiency by 15%-20%.

Power boiler system: In supercritical thermal power generating units, A-179 is often used to manufacture key components such as economizers and superheaters due to its high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. SA-179 steel pipes have been in service for more than 100,000 hours in the power industry, with excellent performance.

Petrochemical refining units: In the U-shaped tube bundle in the hydrogenation reactor, SA-179 can withstand a 20MPa high-pressure hydrogen environment.

SA 179 Standards Pipe Features:

1. High dimensional accuracy: Outer diameter deviation controlled within ±0.5%, wall thickness deviation within ±0.2mm. This high precision ensures the safe operation of the pipeline system.

2. High surface quality requirements: SA-179 standards require the absence of cracks, folds, and scabs to ensure the pipeline system can operate at high temperatures.

3. Good mechanical properties: The tensile strength of SA-179 steel pipes is typically between 310MPa and 440MPa.

4. Strict material composition requirements: To ensure the pipeline does not become brittle under high temperatures, the chemical composition must be strictly controlled.

SA-179 Standards Advantages:

Stable under high temperature and pressure

High dimensional accuracy

Weldability and easy processing

FAQs on SA-179 Procurement and Use

International certification and testing standards‌

Certification requirements
SA-179 steel pipes must comply with the ASME Section II standard. Suppliers should provide ASTM material certificates and third-party test reports (such as SGS, BV)
Testing methods
Ultrasonic testing (UT): Mainly used to detect cracks and inclusions that may exist inside steel pipes, and accurately identify internal defects through the reflection and propagation of high-frequency sound waves.
Eddy current testing (ET): Identify scratches, folds, etc. on the surface of the pipe through wave induction.

Alternative materials and compatibility

Low-temperature alternative: When the operating temperature drops to -29°C or below, conventional materials may become brittle due to the low-temperature environment. SA-334 Gr.1 (better low-temperature toughness) is recommended.
High-pressure thick-wall requirements: In applications with a thickness of more than 5mm, the compressive strength of the material becomes very important. Applications with a wall thickness of more than 5mm are recommended.

Summarize

As the “cost-effective king” in the field of seamless steel pipes, SA-179 has demonstrated irreplaceable advantages in heat transfer equipment below 450°C. It exhibits excellent mechanical properties and outstanding corrosion resistance in extreme high-temperature environments. It can cope with very harsh industrial conditions. In summary, SA-179 low-carbon steel seamless pipe has become one of the indispensable important materials in the fields of engineering and manufacturing due to its excellent characteristics and reliable performance.
