ASTM A333 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials. The full name of ASTM A333 is: ASTM A333/A333M – Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Steel Pipe for Low-Temperature Service and Other Applications with Required Notch Toughness. In summary, A333 is specially developed for low-temperature applications.

A333 Standard Pipe Process

ASTM A333 standard covers two processes: ERW and SMLS

ERW

The ERW process forms the steel pipe into a round tube, heats the edge, and achieves intergranular bonding of the metal through extrusion, followed by welding. The ASTM A333 pipe made with the ERW process has a single weld, but its cost is low, the wall thickness is uniform, and the size is flexible. Therefore, the ASTM A333 made with the ERW process is often used in medium and low pressure environments.

SMLS

The SMLS process is to heat a solid steel billet, perforate the center, and stretch it through rolling and drawing processes to achieve the desired size. The A333 pipe produced by this process has no welds, higher hardness, better pressure bearing capacity, and relatively higher cost. The A333 pipe produced by this process is often used in medium and high pressure environments.

Steel Grades Chemical Composition Chart

The ASTM A333 standard covers many steel grades: Grade 1, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9, Grade 10, and Grade 11. Different steel grades have different chemical compositions and heat treatment types. Grades 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, and 11 are specifically certified for both ERW and SMLS processes, while Grades 7, 8, and 10 can only be processed using SMLS.

Application Areas

  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Industry Chain
    LNG is stored at approximately -162°C. This ultra-low temperature environment is ideal for ASTM A333 pipes, which are used in transportation, cold energy utilization, and BOG processing.
  • Petrochemical Industry
    Many chemical processes require ultra-low temperatures. A333 pipes are used in ethylene plants with a boiling point of -104°C, propylene plants with a boiling point of -47.7°C, and for the transportation of liquid nitrogen and butane.
  • Industrial Refrigeration
    For example, chemical cold storage, food processing freezing lines, and artificial snowmaking systems require low-temperature environments.
