What Is ERW Pipe?

ERW Pipe Meaning

ERW pipe is a common type of pipe used in engineering. What is ERW pipe? ERW, short for Electric Resistance Welding, is a pipe manufacturing process that includes both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) welding. ERW pipe is a cross between welded and seamless pipe, boasting a smoother surface and no visible welds.

ERW Pipe Standards

Many countries have standards that describe ERW, which specify the dimensions, performance, and other aspects of ERW. These include international standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 3183; American standards such as API 5L, ASTM A53, and ASTM A500; and European standards such as EN 10219 and EN 10217.

Electric Resistance Welded Pipe Size

  • Outer Diameter: 1/2″ to 24″
  • Wall Thickness: 0.5mm to 20mm
  • Ends: Plain, Bevel, Threaded
  • Length: 3 meters to 12 meters

What Is ERW Pipe - Production Flowchart

What Is ERW Pipe

Uncoiling:

Hoist the raw steel coil onto the uncoiler for flattening and straightening

Accumulating:

This step is to achieve uninterrupted production. The uncoiled pipe head and tail are welded together to form an uninterrupted steel strip, and the steel strip edges are trimmed to provide the precise strip width required in the forming and ERW seam welding process

Forming

First, the steel strip is preheated and bent on both sides, and then passes through multiple sets of rollers in sequence to change it from straight to C-shaped to O-shaped, and then bent into a circle and welded.

ERW High-frequency Welding

This is the core of the entire process. The tube billet enters a high-frequency current introduction device, where the high-frequency current is heated at the edge of the tube billet. It is then extruded and bonded together.

Dual Heat Treatment

Heat the weld to a normalizing temperature of approximately 900 degrees to eliminate welding defects, optimize weld performance, and improve pipeline quality.

Air & Water Cooling

The pipe at normalizing temperature is naturally cooled in air for a certain distance to allow the steel pipe to homogenize the austenite and complete the initial structural transformation. Then water cooling is carried out, and the pipe is sprayed with water in all directions to cool it.

Sizing

After all the above steps are completed, the pipe is processed to achieve the outer diameter, wall thickness and other dimensions that meet the specified tolerance requirements.

End Processing

Process the two sections of the pipe, correct the uneven sections and weld them into the specified groove.

Pipe Machining

Perform Flattening Test, Ultrasonic Inspection, Hydrostatic Testing, Visual and Dimensional Inspection on pipelines to ensure that pipelines meet standard requirements

Varnishing / Coating

We can coat or paint the pipes according to the requirements of customers or standards, making them more beautiful, corrosion-resistant and rust-proof.

Packaging、Container Stuffing

Finally, after being bundled and packed and safely loaded into the container, you can wait for the pipeline to arrive.

ERW Pipe Application Scenarios

Energy Transportation: ERW pipes are resistant to high temperatures and high pressures and can be used in energy transportation applications such as oil and gas pipelines, oil well casing, and tubing.

Construction and Structural Engineering: They are used in building weighing structures and scaffolding pipes on construction sites.

Automotive Industry: They are used in the manufacture of automobile chassis, body structures, exhaust systems, and other components.

Chemical Industry: ERW can transport some corrosive and non-corrosive media.
