What is Socket Weld?
Socket welding is a connection technology between pipes. Pipes are inserted into fittings with socket welds, and then welded to fix the connection.

Socket Weld Pipe Fittings Types
Socket weld Couplings
Full pipe clamp: connects two pipes of the same diameter, or connects a pipe to a joint
Reducing pipe clamp: a pipe can be connected to pipes with different outer diameters
Half pipe clamp: a pipe branch that can be welded to the main pipe.
Socket weld Elbow
This elbow is called SW elbow for short. Its main function is to change the flow direction of the fluid. There are two angles to choose from, 45 degrees and 90 degrees, and two radius models to choose from, long radius (LR) and short radius (SR).
Socket weld Tee (SW Tee)
It is divided into straight tee and reducing tee. The reducing tee is a branch that extends from the main pipe at a right angle.
Specification for dimensional description of socket welding fittings
When you choose to buy socket welding pipe fittings, please make sure you have the outer diameter, thickness and pressure bearing capacity you need.
Outer diameter marking: NPS X
Example: NPS5, which means the nominal outer diameter is 5.
Pressure level: Follow ASME B16.11 standard
Class 3000: PN50 pressure system
The unified writing format of socket welding pipe fittings: “SW+pipe fitting type+size” structure”
Advantages and Disadvantages of Socket Welds
advantage | shortcoming |
1. No spot welding, direct alignment, easy operation | 1. Expansion gaps need to be reserved. Too large or too small will affect the use. |
Differences between socket welding and butt welding fittings
Comparison Dimensions | Butt Weld | |
Connection structure | Pipe insertion socket welding | End face welding |
Applicable pressure | ≤3000 PSI | Up to 10000 PSI |
Difficulty of detection | Difficulty in detecting the root zone | Full cross section inspection |
Reference Standards | ASME B16.11 | ASME B16.9 |
Pipe fittings price | High price of pipe fittings Low installation cost | Low price of pipe fittings |
Application Differences | Small diameter pipes | High temperature and high pressure pipeline |
