FBE coating is the full name of fusion bonded epoxy coating, which is an anti-corrosion technology that uses an electrostatic spraying process to melt and solidify epoxy powder on the metal surface. Because at a temperature above 200°C, the epoxy resin powder is coated on the surface and reacts chemically with the metal substrate to form a dense, highly adhesive protective layer.

FBE Coating‌ Historical Development

In the 1950s, in order to protect oil and gas pipelines and prevent corrosion caused by environmental factors during transportation, FBE technology was developed. However, the early coating was applied by manual spraying, which was effective but inefficient and limited in scope. As time went by, people’s requirements for corrosion protection became increasingly stringent, and its solvent-free and low VOC emission characteristics promoted technological iteration. According to statistics from Global Coating Solutions, the global FBE coating market size will exceed US$4.2 billion in 2022. It is growing rapidly at a compound annual growth rate of 6.3%.

What Pipes Can Use FBE Powder Coating?

FBE coatings are suitable for most types of pipelines, including oil and gas pipelines, industrial pipelines, submarine pipelines, water supply pipelines, and high-temperature pipelines. FBE coatings are suitable for almost all media (oil, gas, water, chemicals) regardless of the medium used. They are also suitable for use in all environments, including soil, ocean, and air. FBE coatings can also be used on commercially available pipes made of carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and other materials. Most standards (such as ASTM A333 and ASTM A53) are also applicable. If you’re looking for corrosion-resistant pipes, FBE coatings are a great all-purpose option.

FBE Cannot Be Used

FBE coating should be carefully considered only in the following situations

  • It is more difficult to apply FBE coating evenly on large diameter pipes on site, and the quality is not as stable as factory prefabrication. If you need on-site construction and require uniformity and stable quality, you should carefully choose FBE pipe coating.
  • If the medium is very rough, it will cause severe wear on the pipe! You should choose carefully. Alternatively, adding an additional wear-resistant layer to the FBR coated base is also a good option.
  • The FBR coating is not very smooth. If you have ultra-high requirements for the flow rate of the medium, you can choose other smoother anti-corrosion coatings, such as liquid epoxy or polyurethane coatings.

FBE Coating Three Types

Single-layer FBE

In fact, in practical applications, single-layer FBE is rarely used. It is mainly used in environments where the corrosion requirements are not particularly high and the mechanical damage is low.

Double-layer FBE

With FBE coating as the base layer, the outer layer can be a thicker FBE modified layer or other outer layers. You can choose the outer layer according to your needs.

Three-layer PE/PP

The first layer is still FBE as the base layer, the second layer is polymer adhesive, and the third layer can be polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). This coating method is most commonly used on the seabed and has strong anti-corrosion and anti-mechanical damage performance.

  • Strong adhesion, with chemical adhesion far superior to physical adhesion.
  • After curing, it is highly chemically inert and offers excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Resistant to cathodic disbondment, it prevents the coating from lifting and separating from the pipe when damaged, preventing further damage.
  • Excellent wear resistance, strong impact resistance, and a certain degree of flexibility.
  • Outstanding high-temperature resistance makes it the most heat-resistant pipeline coating, a core advantage of FBE coated pipe.
