ASTM A53 Grade B – E, S Type Dimensions, Chemical Composition, Mechanical Properties

Table of Contents

ASTM A53 Grade B is a steel grade of ASTM A53 standard, also known as ASME SA53 pipe. We know that ASTM A53 Grade B is used in many scenarios, so do you know why it is so popular?

Types of ASTM A53 Grade B Steel Pipe

The ASTM A53 standard is divided into not only two grades but also three types: E, F, and S.
ASTM A53 Grade A is compatible with all three types, but the ASTM A53 Grade B we’ll introduce today is only compatible with Types E and S.

The core difference between these two types is the different manufacturing processes

ASTM A53 Grade B

- ASTM A53 Type E Grade B - Electric Resistance Welded Pipe

ASTM A53 Type E Grade B of welding uses the ERW resistance welding process, which involves continuously rolling the steel coil into a tube using a forming machine, heating the edges with resistance heat, and then squeezing and fusing them together to form a weld.

- ASTM A53 Type S Grade B - Seamless Steel Pipe

ASTM A53 Type S Grade B of steel is seamlessly produced by heating a solid round billet to a certain temperature, piercing it, and then cold drawing/hot rolling it.

Testing and Inspection

Pipe Hydrostatic Testing

Every ASTM A53 Grade B pipe must undergo hydrostatic testing. The test pressure must reach 60% of the pipe wall’s minimum yield strength, and the test duration must be at least five seconds. Standards vary for different pipe sizes. For pipes larger than three feet, the hydrostatic test pressure must not exceed 2800 PSI. For pipes with an NPS of 3 inches or less, the hydrostatic test pressure must not exceed 2500 PSI.

Pipe Flattening Test

The flattening test is mandatory for Type E pipe, but not required for Type S pipe. A section of the finished pipe is cut and subjected to a two-stage flattening test. The first section must be absolutely crack-free, while the second section can be tested as needed.

ASTM A53 Grade B Application

  • Low-pressure fluid transportation: low-pressure natural gas pipelines, compressed air pipelines, non-corrosive media transportation, and drainage systems.
  • Structural support and framing: solar panels, billboard frames, handrails, and guardrails.
  • Mechanical equipment: hydraulic cylinders and drive shafts.
  • Power industry: cooling water pipes for power plants.
