ASTM A53 pipe comes in three types and two grades. Do you know what these three types and two grades are? Do you understand the relationship between them? Some types can only produce one grade, while others can produce both. Which combination offers the highest strength? Below is an introduction to these three types and two grades.

- A53 Pipe Grade A and B

ASTM A53 pipe comes in two grades: ASTM A53 Grade A and ASTM A53 Grade B. While the chemical composition of these two grades differs little, their core difference lies in their strength.

ASTM A53 Gr A
Minimum yield strength ≥ 33,000 psi (230 MPa)
Minimum tensile strength ≥ 48,000 psi (330 MPa)
Elongation: 30% (2-inch scale)

ASTM A53 Gr B
Minimum yield strength ≥ 35,000 psi (240 MPa)
Minimum tensile strength ≥ 60,000 psi (415 MPa)
Elongation: 25% (2-inch scale)

- A53 Pipe Type F、E and S

There are three types of ASTM A53, namely ASTM A53 F, ASTM A53 E and ASTM A53 S. The core difference between them is the manufacturing process.

ASTM A53 Type F
The process of ASTM A53 Type F uses Furnace Butt-Welded, which is only suitable for ASTM A53 Gr.A. It has been eliminated due to its low weld strength and inability to perform non-destructive testing.

ASTM A53 Type E
ASTM A53 Type E uses the ERW process and is compatible with both Gr.A and Gr.B grades. ASTM A53 ERW pipe is the most commonly used and most cost-effective type, suitable for low-pressure fluid transportation and building structures.

ASTM A53 Type S
The process used for ASTM A53 Type S is SMLS, which is suitable for both Gr.A and Gr.B grades. Pipes produced using this process have the best strength and pressure resistance and are typically used in high-temperature and high-pressure systems or as weighing fittings.

An ASTM A53 pipe is composed of a combination of type and grade. A53 Type F Grade B offers the highest strength, but also the highest cost. Type E Grade B is the most common combination, providing adequate strength without being particularly costly. Type E Grade A is primarily used in low-pressure applications.
