  • Shipbuilding: ASTM A106 Seamless Pipes are often used in the fuel systems of ships. At the same time, it is also suitable for beveling, threading, flanging, grooving and other similar forming operations, as well as bending and welding processing.

To manufacture ASTM A106 standard pipes, pandapipe start with solid steel bars that are cut into billets of precise weight. 

Then, they are loaded into and heated in a natural gas-powered rotary hearth furnace and heated until it is between 1250 ℃ and 1280 ℃

The heated steel then moves to the barrel-type piercer which transforms the material into a hollow bloom. 

This is achieved through a process known as the management effect. 

Next, the hollow bloom enters the premium quality finishing mill to be elongated. It is then pushed into an induction furnace to reheat to a homogenous temperature before it is transferred to the stretch-reducing mill where the ASTM A106 pipes outside diameter are reduced to match its specific end customer needs.

ASTM A106 Seamless Pipe-Heat Treatment

Heat treatment process ensures the hardness and toughness of the steel pipe. 

This begins in the Austenizing Furnace where the pipe is reheated to a temperature above the Austenite transformation temperature. 

It then enters the quenching process where water sprays are used to rapidly cool the pipes from approximately 900 ℃ to ambient temperature causing a rapid phase transformation in the steel. 

The resulting Marin Siddik phase in the ASTM A106 steel pipe is very strong and brittle, so the pipe is then reheated to a temperature lower than its transformation point in the tempering furnace to recover the steel ductility and adjust the mechanical properties to offend the required range. 

The pipe then moves to the resizing machine to achieve the dimensional tolerances required before straightening. 

In the straightening machine, the final straightening required an ovalization to be achieved. Leaving the pipe in its final state before being checked and tested.

Ensure that the pipes meet the standard requirements and customer requirements.

First, the static water test and electromagnetic inspection are carried out to detect whether there are defects inside and outside the pipe. Then the wall thickness is measured by the high-frequency sound energy of ultrasonic detection.

Then the pipe is finished and beveled to begin the threading process. Fixed pipe position, automatic rotation of the headstock. The threads are visually inspected and the dimensions are automatically controlled by advanced inspection equipment. Automated special equipment is then used to obtain the final ASTM A106 piping and connection joints.

Drift testing is performed to ensure that no blockage occurs in the pipe. Then the pipe is painted or varnished and other surface treatment to avoid corrosion during storage or transportation.

After that, it is measured, weighed and marked. Each pipe is identified by heat and pipe number through pipe tracking technology.

Finally, the pipes are automatically bundled and transported to designated service centers for distribution to customers.

For seamless steel pipes, there is no difference between ASTM A106 and ASME SA106 standards. They are standards for different naming methods developed by two different organizations.

In the official version of ASEM II, the Materials section confirms that SA106 is identical to ASTM A106. There is therefore no need to confuse the different names, which share the same terms in the standard.

2. What is the temperature range of A106 pipe

The operating temperature range of the A106 pipeline is approximately -29°C (-20°F) to 427°C (800°F).
